As AED has grown, so too has it's footprint. Part of a portfolio of similar projects supporting a US-Based Midstream organization, each assignment utilizes a core team experienced both with the scope of work and client requirements to drive standardization, reduce inefficencies and leverage external team rapport. Although scope varies depending on location and market needs, most systems include mulitple butane storage vessels, truck offloading stations, pumps, dike relocation, associated interconnecting pipe and racks, and permitting services.

As part of AED's sustaining capital program support, AED's on-site and home office personnel designed an upgrade for a major refinery’s filter enhancement. The project consisted of a technical bid evaluation, procurement and detailed designs to increase the backwash capability supporting the refinery’s process of newly added filter improvements. Since the design utilized existing equipment, ASME calculations were provided to re-rate the pressure vessel and create pump specifications for its new service.

AED provided piping and electrical detailed design services to support tank farm berm improvements for a refinery. The brownfield project required rerouting of existing benzene piping due to the modifications and involved the development of isometrics and piping layout drawings. AED’s electrical team designed a heat trace system for the newly installed piping to prevent the benzene from freezing. Because AED's team was specifically built to be scaled to execute projects of this scope and size, the team was able to execute the project quickly, without error and under budget.

Unlike smaller firms that can only support single discipline studies or earlier project development AED's capabilities span the entire project lifecycle. For this project, AED provided both FEED and detailed design services for the installation of a new heat exchanger for a refinery without requiring contractor handover. The scope of work included civil/structural designs for the exchanger’s foundation and instrumentation, and controls design for process instruments. Additional piping was needed to support the newly installed equipment, which required a pipe stress analysis.

AED assisted in an installation investigation of (3) self-priming pumps for a refinery’s wastewater recycle pit. The severe vibrations from the pumps were causing intermittent problems with the ultrasonic flow meters leading to a $30k/month temporary workaround, prompting an investigation. AED’s mechanical team reviewed the pump specifications, contacted the manufacturer, and analyzed the installation. The result of the investigation showed the pumps were cavitating due to poor equipment selection, leading to the entrainment of air in the pumps lacking maintained minimum level controls. AED’s solution comprised of a restriction orifice allowing for smoother operation and reduction of pressure build up in the pump. Minimum-level logic was added to the DCS programming to support the new equipment.

AED provided front-end engineering and detailed design for the OSBL portion of a new recycled motor oil processing facility. The designs consisted of developing 30% and 10% construction cost estimates. The work consisted of 11 new pumps, new and repurposed tanks, tank mixers, tank level instrumentation, and vapor control, detonation arrestors, 9,000 LF of 10”, 8”, 6”, and 4” piping with associated electrical heat tracing, new truck rack and existing truck rack piping components, earthwork (dikes), roadwork, perimeter fencing, and a new MCC.

AED provided front-end engineering and detailed design for a refinery to reduce the risk of blending zinc decomposition at high temperatures. Steam heating calculations were performed on 20 tanks and the front-end design was associated with de-superheaters to reduce steam pressure built up in the tanks. To support the zinc mitigation process, AED completed the piping design for the replacement of the steam piping and designed 20+ Safety Instrumented Functions (SIF’s) for the installation of SIS junction boxes and wiring.

AED executed a project involving the modification of an existing hot oil heating system serving asphalt lines for a major pipeline company. The addition of a new PPA (polyphosphoric acid) tank including dosing pumps was required to run the new truck rack loading lines. The project also included modifications for the asphalt tanks’ heating and mixing systems. AED provided an Electrical + Instrumentation scope of work to include power to the new asphalt and additive pumps, and new remote I/O panels. Detailed designs were completed in three months and the project was finished within an expedited timeframe.
