AED lead the replacement of old Modicon and Provox hardware with a new DeltaV process control system during a three-week turnaround for a chemical plant in Texas. AED provided design oversight, turnaround planning, and construction management services for the replacement affecting over 1200 loops, which included a concurrent reactor replacement. Installation execution and loop checking were completed over a four-day period ahead of schedule. The team faced many construction challenges, most notably the rescheduling of the outage and workspace constraints in the electrical rooms due to Hurricane Florence.

AED provided front-end engineering and detailed design for the OSBL portion of a new recycled motor oil processing facility. The designs consisted of developing 30% and 10% construction cost estimates. The work consisted of 11 new pumps, new and repurposed tanks, tank mixers, tank level instrumentation, and vapor control, detonation arrestors, 9,000 LF of 10”, 8”, 6”, and 4” piping with associated electrical heat tracing, new truck rack and existing truck rack piping components, earthwork (dikes), roadwork, perimeter fencing, and a new MCC.

AED designed and commissioned a new PLC system to support a plant upgrade. The new equipment, Allen Bradley Compact Logix hardware, required a detailed design in which AED developed P&IDs and functional descriptions for the PLC hardware. The plant’s operations were running on small outages (only a few hours at a time) which provided narrow windows of opportunity for the switchover to occur. The AED commissioning and construction management team completed the switchover and commissioning activities in two weeks. During this time, the company provided project management services for the overall project, coordinated with vendors and contractors, and managed the project schedule.

AED executed a project involving the modification of an existing hot oil heating system serving asphalt lines for a major pipeline company. The addition of a new PPA (polyphosphoric acid) tank including dosing pumps was required to run the new truck rack loading lines. The project also included modifications for the asphalt tanks’ heating and mixing systems. AED provided an Electrical + Instrumentation scope of work to include power to the new asphalt and additive pumps, and new remote I/O panels. Detailed designs were completed in three months and the project was finished within an expedited timeframe.

AED responded to an urgent request from a global chemical manufacturer to design a new MDI Drum Thaw facility. AED’s civil/structural team designed a new building to house the drum ovens and coordinated associated permitting. The mechanical and piping team designed the process utilities supply (steam, potable water, condensate return) to the building. The company’s Electrical + Instrumentation team designed the power supply to the MDI building and auxiliaries as well as the instrumentation design for the drum temperature monitoring. The detailed design was executed in three months and the facility was completed in just over eight months from the start of the detailed design. Laser scanning led to zero field rework. AED was commended for their swift actions and quality in the design of the project.
